| Yang Lina |
 |
| Former actress Yang Lina, born in 1972 in the province of Jilin, attended the People’s Liberation Army Art Academy. With Old Man (1999) and Home Video (2001), Yang Lina introduced the concept of “personal documentary” into China, a culture in which the notion of “the intimate” and “the personal” are problematic. Her work represents an interesting variation on the actress’s narcissism: she keeps her image out of the frame but tantalizingly close, at the border, in the same diegetic space as her subjects with whom she converses freely in her melodious and highly recognizable voice. |
