Prima nazionale/Italian première
Synopsis
Popular neighbourhoods in Alexandria where newcomers to the city are concentrated in conditions of abject poverty, without any social welfare. When Fatma’s son falls ill, the family cannot afford the costs of care. Unknown to her husband, Fatma sets off for Cairo and begins to beg on the streets of the capital. When she returns home, it is too late. Blinded by her grief, the woman becomes increasingly avid and obsessed by money, until she becomes an unscrupulous loan shark. A great popular novel that revitalizes the tradition of the Egyptian melodrama, denouncing the poverty and state of abandon of the Egyptian people.
