The crowdfunding campaign Mambéty, or the journey of the hyena has kicked off!

Join us and support the publication of the first work in Italy entirely dedicated to
Djibril Diop Mambéty, the visionary master of African cinema.

 

Our goal is to publish a book to pay tribute to Mambéty, one of the most influential African directors, on the 20^th anniversary of his death… and YOU can help us too!

There’s time until November 18th to support the campaign with a donation on Indiegogo.

The book is edited by  Simona Cella and Cinzia Quadrati, in collaboration with Alessandra Speciale, Associazione COE, Festival del Cinema Africano, d’Asia e America Latina and the support of Cineteca di Bologna.

The campaign is promoted by Associazione COE, organizer of the African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival since 1991.

This publication isn’t only a cultural project, but a necessary political gesture, to pay homage to a committed artist, promoter of the African culture worldwide.

Djibril Diop Mambéty: the African Godard 

Refined, visionary, innovator, the Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty (1945-1998), with a short and dazzling filmography revolutionized the African film landscape, inventing new narrative models and creating an alternative to the realist school of Sembène Ousmane.

Through a refined reflection on film language and a continuous experimentation of styles, Mambéty disrupted the traditional narration around the dynamics of tradition/modernity and African culture/Western culture, themes that have always been at the center of the film production of the African continent.

Touki Bouki and Hyènes, his most famous films, are real cinematographic and political manifestos on migration dynamics and the system of economic aid between Africa and the West, and they have inspired many international directors. Martin Scorsese is one of them: he personally supported the restoration of Touki Bouki with his foundation The Film Foundation – World Cinema Project, in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna.

Touki Bouki is an act of rebellion against the mirage of Europe, a story of great prophetic lucidity on the phenomenon of illegal migration: a first-hand experience of Mambéty, who illegally boarded a ship to Marseilles from where was immediately expelled.

Hyènes, a brilliant review of the play by Frederich Dürrenmatt The visit of the old lady, with the story of returning to the native village of a woman enriched abroad, launches a sharp accusation against the international economic corporations and the corrupting power of the money.

His urban and post-modern cinema continues to inspire directors worldwide, especially in his continent, such as Moussa Sene Absa, Alain Gomis, Mati Diop, Abderramane Sissako and many more.

Three of Mambéty’s films (Hyènes, Le Franc and La petite vendeuse de soleil) are among the titles available in Associazione COE’s COEmedia Film Distribution catalogue, a unique catalogue in Italy with more than 60 active titles and more than 200 archived films from Africa, Asia and Latin America (most of them coming from the selection of Milan’s African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival).
